Exporting Your Vault Data
How to export your passwords and secure notes from SafeVault in CSV or encrypted JSON format.
Why Export Your Data?
You might want to export your vault data to:
- Create a local backup
- Migrate to another password manager
- Review your stored credentials offline
- Meet compliance or audit requirements
Export Formats
SafeVault supports two export formats:
CSV (Plain Text)
- Human-readable spreadsheet format
- Compatible with most password managers and spreadsheet apps
- Warning: CSV files are unencrypted — your passwords are in plain text
Encrypted JSON
- SafeVault's native encrypted format
- Protected with your master password
- Ideal for secure backups that only you can read
How to Export
- Open SafeVault on your desktop or web app
- Go to Settings → Data → Export Vault
- Enter your master password to authorize the export
- Choose your export format (CSV or Encrypted JSON)
- Select what to export: passwords, secure notes, or both
- Click Export and choose a save location
After Exporting
If you exported as CSV
- Move the file to a secure location (e.g., an encrypted USB drive)
- Delete the file after use — it contains your passwords in plain text
- Never email a CSV export or store it in cloud storage without encryption
If you exported as Encrypted JSON
- Store the file wherever you like — it's protected by your master password
- Remember that you'll need your master password to import it later
- Keep a backup of your recovery kit alongside the export
Importing Back Into SafeVault
To restore from an export:
- Go to Settings → Data → Import
- Select SafeVault Export as the source
- Upload your file
- If encrypted, enter your master password
- Review and confirm the import
Important Notes
- Exports include all data in your vault at the time of export
- Shared passwords are exported — recipients won't lose access
- Two-factor authentication secrets are included in exports
- Vault folders and organization are preserved in JSON exports but not in CSV
